IDI AMINI GRANDSON THROWN OUT OF PARLIAMENT

The Court of Appeal has Tuesday nullified the election of Taban Amin, — the grandson to former President Idi Amin — as the Kibanda North (Kiryandongo) MP on grounds that he is not a registered voter of the constituency, which disqualifies his nomination and election.
The three Judges of the appellant court Steven Kavuma, Cheborion Barishaki and Paul Mugamba overturned an earlier decision by Masindi High Court Judge Elizabeth Nahamya which had maintained him as the duly area elected MP.

The judges ruled that Taban failed to give satisfactory reasons for noncompliance with the particular Electoral requirement.

Mr Amin was found to have discrepancies within his names whereby on the National Voters Register he is addressed Amin Tampo whereas on the National ID he is Taban Idi Amin. On his nomination form and academic documents and passport he is Idi Taban Amin.

Court therefore ordered the Electoral Commission to organize fresh elections and for Taban and the E.C to pay half of the costs incurred by his challenger Sam Amooti Otada.

The youthful Amin overcame tight competition from Mr Otada – who had held the area MP seat for 15 year – in the February elections
