Moshi. The police in Kilimanjaro have seized 30 trucks allegedly loaded with maize, which was being smuggled into Kenya a day after Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa raised concern over the amount of food, which had been exported to neighbouring countries.

The trucks were seized during an operation conducted under Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander (RPC) Hamis Issah on Monday night.

Speaking to The Citizen yesterday morning, Mr Issah said after the PM issued the directive the police responded immediately, which led to the seizure of 30 trucks in Himo.

“We are holding the drivers of the trucks for interrogation,” he said.

The RPC added that the police in the region were investigating reports that some of its officers had been collaborating with unscrupulous traders to smuggle maize into neighbouring countries.

On Monday, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa imposed a ban on exportation of food to neighbouring countries.

The Prime Minister said the government had reports that some of the police had been collaborating with unscrupulous traders to smuggle food into neighbouring countries.

He said government would take stern measures against those, who exported foodstuffs since the country didn’t have enough food.

The Premier said this at the national Idd-ul-Fitr prayer and Idd Baraza at Riadha Mosque in Moshi Urban, where he was the guest of honour.

He said there had been cases of export of foodstuffs, especially through Tarakea, Horororo and Mwanga borders.

The PM said anyone, who wanted to export foodstuffs should first apply for a permit from the authorities. “Any truck found loaded with foodstuffs at any border will be confiscated and the food will be taken to the national food warehouse,” he told.
