ANOTHER CHADEMA MP DETAINED FOR SEDITION IN MBOZI
Mbozi. Member of Parliament for Mbozi in Songwe Region, Pascal Haonga (Chadema), has been detained by the police for alleged incitement and holding illegal assembly.
Songwe Police Regional Commissioner (RPC), Mathias Nyange, confirmed in a telephone interview that the law maker has been put under custody. However, he didn’t go into details saying he was out of the office.
A councilor in Mlowo ward in Mbozi district, Mr Sebastian Kilindu, said on Monday, the MP was blocked by Mlowo residents as he was on his way to Nambizo village. They wanted tell him challenges they are facing.
The people told the MP of the lack of reliable means of transport after a ban on using lorries as passenger vehicles was introduced.
“Mr Haonga listened to their concern and I guess it is a reason for his arrest as he is alleged to have issued seditious statements when responding to the sentiments,” he said.
He added that on Tuesday, Mr Haonga received a phone call from the police who asked him to report at the Vwawa police station before he was detained and questioned for sedition.
Chadema’s Songwe regional secretary, Mr Meshack Mgaya, said they received report of the MP’s arrest when the secretariat was attending a public rally by held by Tunduma legislator, Mr Frank Mwakajoka.
“We then contacted party lawyers so that the detained MP can get legal assist,” he said.
Recently, the police here banned the use of trucks as means of passenger transport. The order has caused tension between law enforcers, residents and owners of the lorries.
