INCIDENTS OF FAKE NOTES BEING INJECTED INTO CIRCULATION ON THE RISE IN MWANZA, TANZANIA
Mwanza. Incidents of counterfeit bank notes being injected into circulation are on the rise in Mwanza City.
This was noted after a total of 159 fake notes of the Sh10,000 denomination presupposing to be worth over Sh1.5 million were impounded in the past one year.
Mwanza regional Police commander Ahmed Msangi noted that at least seven people have been arrested on various dates in connection with the crime. All seized counterfeit bank notes are often of Sh10,000 denomination, he said.
According to reports by RPC Msangi released on Wednesday, the latest incident occurred on Tuesday when a suspect was arrested at a bar along Bwiru Street in Ilemela District having a total of 60 counterfeit notes purporting to be worth Sh60,000.
He said the suspect is a 27-year old resident of Ibungilo Street in the city.
Mr Msangi said another suspect was arrested on May 29 on Igoma Street in possession of 200 counterfeit notes for the value of Sh200,000. The suspect was a 29-year old Busega Street resident in Igoma Ward in the City.
Police reports have it that on April 29, another 27-year old suspect was found in possession of 90 fake money papers worth Sh90,000. He is a resident of Majengo Mapya Street in the city.
The commander said another suspect was arrested with the fake notes at a City Centre based hotel and the papers purported to be worth Sh460,000. The suspect is a resident of Kirumba Street.
Two more suspects, one aged 24 and the other 21, were arrested on February 1 and were in possession of Sh370,000 of fake bank notes.
He concluded the list of the incidents by saying another suspect was arrested on January 11 along Kirumba Bar being in possession of Sh40,000 of the fake bank notes. The suspect was 22 years old and resident of Misungwi District.
