MAGUFULI ORDERS ARMY TO SURRENDER 50 ACRES BACK TO MKATA VILLAGERS

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania President John Magufuli on Thursday ordered the National Service to return 50 acres of land to Mkata Village after failing to develop it for seven years.

Dr Magufuli issued the order during his roadside public meeting at Mkata on his way to Tanga where he will officiate the laying of the foundation stone for the construction of the Hoima-Tanga oil pipeline alongside his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni on Saturday.

The National Service requested the land from village government stating that they were going to construct an industry in the area. Seven years later, the Army is yet to develop the land. Local leaders told President Magufuli that they would like to have the land back.

“If they failed to utilise the land for seven years, it means they don’t have the means to do so and they can’t build the factory in the near future,” said Dr Magufuli.

“There is the challenge of land here. Therefore, I order the land returned to the village effective today (Thursday). If other investors are to be found then they can be given the land. We need development,” added President Magufuli.

Meanwhile, the Head of State gave Health minister Ummy Mwalimu a 15-day ultimatum to probe the use of Sh500 million which was released for construction of a government hospital in the area.

The minister told the villagers and their MP Mboni Mhita that already Sh800 million has been allocated for another phase of the construction. However, this will be disbursed after the probe on funds given previously.
