Program Assistant provides day-to-day support for project and central office operations to ensure financial, contractual, and administrative functions of the project. This position will be based in Mwanza, TanzaniaProgram Overview
With the ultimate goal to improve the health and well-being of women and children in the Lake and Western zones of the United Republic of Tanzania, The Canadian Government (DFATD)-funded More and Better Midwives for Rural Tanzania (MBM-RTz) initiative will make significant contributions to ensuring that women and children in these areas have greater access to skilled midwifery care now and in the future. From 2016-2021, Jhpiego and its partners, Amref Health Africa in Canada (Amref) and the Canadian Association of Midwives (CAM), will support the Tanzania Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children (henceforth referred to as MOH) to fulfill national priorities for maternal and newborn survival and address inadequate numbers and inequitable distribution of human resources of health for midwifery care.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate ordering and shipping of materials for project activities
- Assist in the payment of consultants
- Arrange hotel reservations and track related travel expenses
- Provide administrative support to operation of project activities
- Work with Program Officer to prepare activity budgets and procurement requisitions
- Schedule and support visitors to the project office
- Assist with drafting, editing and proofreading of technical materials and appropriate reports of program activities and results to the donor, progress reports, activity charts, and annual reports as requested
- Work collaboratively with project and headquarters finance staff to prepare and track the progress of project and activity budgets
- Ensure compliance with DFATD operational policies and regulations
- Work collaboratively with other project team members to ensure necessary project planning, resource availability and management activities function smoothly and efficiently
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public health or related field, or equivalent job experience
- Experience in coordinating foreign government financed projects
- Familiarity with international donor policies and administrative procedures
- 2 years of experience in administrative support of international health projects
- Programming experience in maternal and child health
- Experience working in Tanzania
- Proven track record coordinating a project team composed of technical experts, program, and finance staff
- Fluency in verbal, written and interpersonal communication in English and Swahili
- Proficiency in writing and editing letters, reports, and documents
- Strong decision making and results oriented approach
- Ability to interact skillfully and diplomatically with numerous counterparts such as networks of senior level international health professionals, donors, universities and other partners
- Comfortable with a team approach to programming and the ability to manage several major activities simultaneously
- Ability to work in a complex environment with multiple tasks, short deadlines and intense pressure to perform
- Ability to travel nationally as needed
