FREEMAN MBOWE RAISES AN ALARM POOR GROWTH OF AGRICULTURE SECTOR
Dar es Salaam. National Chairman of the opposition party, Chadema, Mr Freeman Mbowe has raised an alarm over inadequate growth of the agriculture sector, which does not keep pace to population growth in the country.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday Mr Mbowe said due to neglect, the agriculture sector has been growing at an average of 1.7 per cent in the last three years while the population has been growing at an average of 2.5 per cent. He called for the government to be keener on developing the agriculture sector.
He added that the low food production has led to higher food inflation rates.
Mr Mbowe, who is also the leader of the Opposition camp in Parliament also expressed concern over the increase of food prices. He said, for example, the price of a 100 kilo-bag of maize which was being sold at Sh47,000 in 2015 has increased to Sh90,000 this year. He urged the government to come up with plans to rescue the situation.
