Dar es Salaam. Minister for Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, Ms Ummy Mwalimu, has health insurance scheme for children dubbed health Toto Card.

The scheme has been designed and will be run by national health insurance Fund (NHIF).

She said at the launch on Monday that the move aims at helping parents enable their children aged under 18 access medical treatment at affordable price.

She said the scheme was a government strategic plan that would see children access medical treatment at Sh50,400 annually.

“Current statistics shows that the country's population has reached 52 million and 26 million of them are children under 18," she said.

According to her, more effort is needed to ensure all children are secured with health insurance schemes by 2020.

NHIF Director General, Mr Benard Konga said since establishment of the service last year as a pilot project, demand of the service has increased.

“So far we have provided 50,000 health cards to children under 18 and we plan to cover all regions by 2020, " he said.
