INJURED TANZANIAN TEENS TO FLY HOME ON AUGUST 16, 2017

The three children who received life-saving medical treatment in Sioux City after surviving a May 6 school bus accident in the east African nation of Tanzania will return home Aug. 16.

A farewell reception for the children and their parents will take place at the Leiter Room at Mercy Medical Center, following a news conference where Mercy representatives and key physicians will offer updates on the children's conditions.

Since receiving their treatment, a 13-year-old girl named Sadia, a 13-year-old girl named Doreen and a 12-year-old boy named Wilson have been receiving physical therapy at the Sioux City Ronald McDonald House.

The sole survivors of a crash that killed 33 of their classmates, two teachers and the bus driver, the children received medical assistance by representatives of Siouxland Tanzania Educational Medical Ministries (STEMM).

STEMM subsequently worked with Samaritan's Purse -- an international humanitarian group headed by the Rev. Franklin Graham -- to treat the children for their injuries in Sioux City.

Mercy donated tens of thousands of dollars in medical care to treat the kids, who sustained multiple fractures in the bus crash. The three were expected to make full recoveries.
